Treatment and community resources for Veterans and Offenders with Dual Disorder
This workshop applies what we know about dual disorders to the treatment of specific populations: Veterans and offenders. With economic woes comes increased drug addiction and severe stress-related mental illness. Specific techniques will also be introduced using demonstration and role plays.
Working with school personnel to develop effective strategies to meet the rising challenge of substance abuse & mental illness
This training explores the development of an effective and sophisticated system of care that can be developed for the purposes of identifying "at risk" students and then attending to their needs within the school setting. The treatment challenges of Dual Diagnosis whereby the "co-occurring illnesses" are mental health as well as a substance abuse issues will be discussed.
Motivational Interviewing: Empowering Clients to Change
This is a training on Motivational Interviewing, a counseling approach that has been developed to assist resistant clients to change. A general overview of the theory and concepts related to Motivational Interviewing will be presented.
THE DSM IV-TR Simplified
This is a workshop on the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Psychiatric Disorders, the main diagnostic reference for clinicians working with psychiatric and substance use disorders. Instruction on making multiaxial assessments will be provided, as well as an overview of psychiatric disorders that most frequently co-occur with substance use disorders and and their identifying features.
Using Motivational Interviewing in Dual Disorder Evaluation
This workshop is a training on how clinicians can utilize motivational interviewing during dual diagnosis assessment. Motivational interviewing aims to decrease "resistance" and assess readiness for change across the diagnostic spectrum.
Using Motivational Interviewing in Treating Chemical Addiction with Sex Offenders
This is a training on how clinicians can utilize motivational interviewing as part of treating chemical addiction in sec offenders. This workshop incorporates the notion that chemical addiction is the most common feature in those that sexually offend and therefore, reducing the likelihood of re-offending may involve reducing the risk of substance use.
Diagnosis & Treatment of Persons with Co-occurring Disorders, with a focus on the role of 12 Step recovery programs
Persons with co-occurring mental illness and substance problems are often under diagnosed and under treated for their conditions within the psychiatric and chemical dependency systems of care.
Twelve Steps to Healthy Parenting - For Parents
In this workshop, parents, and other significant others, will be introduced to "Parenting in Recovery with Love and Logic." This program introduces basic communication and discipline strategies that strengthen families.
Understanding and assisting substance affected families - For Professionals (from teachers to counselors)
This workshop focuses on the basic descriptions and strategies that are useful in working with substance affected families. Using the ABC-X model as a visual tool, participants will have the opportunity to identify the issues that substance affected families face.
The Art of Spiritual Counseling: Offering hope to those caught in the web of addiction
The importance of the spiritual dimension of addiction has long been recognized in the recovery community. Less defined and understood is the role of spirituality within the clinical setting. This workshop will provide education and insight into the integration of spirituality within the recovery treatment settings.
