Chinese Class For Beginners

Chinese for Beginners is for students with little or no background in Mandarin, the form generally regarded as ’standard’ Chinese. The goal of this course is to teach basic oral and written communication skills as well as to introduce students to Chinese culture and the everyday experiences life in China. Students will begin building a solid vocabulary, while learning correct pronunciation, vocal tones, grammar and the art of producing accurate Chinese characters, or ’hanzi.’

A strong focus of this course will be on helping students develop conversational skills. At the end of the course, students will have a solid groundwork for more advanced study.

Intermediate Chinese is designed to help students acquire the communication skills needed in daily Chinese life, as both writers and speakers of Mandarin.

Students will continue to enlarge their vocabulary by reading a variety of print materials; develop their listening and speaking skills through oral exercises, receive more intensive practice writing hanzi’, and have opportunities to continue improving their conversation skills through casual dialog about everyday topics such as meeting friends, discussing books, and talking about school. More advanced information about Chinese history and culture will be introduced, as well. By the end of the course, students will be ready for advanced level study or residence in China.
