Seminars in Chinese Culture
The Fifth New England World Language Department Chair Seminar
UMass Confucius Institute will have The Fifth New England World Language Department Chair Seminar at 3550 B, Campus Center on March 12. We invite a distinquished scholar to give a lecture in the afternoon from 1:15-2:45. The title of the lecture is The Effect of China’s Foreign Policy and Economic Power on the Relationship Between Developed and Developing Countries in the 21st Century.
This lecture is open to the public. All the faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend.
Description of the lecture:
Based on the cover story of Newsweek of the first issue of 2008, "The much-heralded advent of China as a global power is no longer a forecast but a reality…… In 2007 China contributed more to global growth than the United States, the first time another country had done so since at least the 1930s." And "In two decades China has experienced the same degree of industrialization, urbanization and social transformation as Europe did in two centuries…… Since then (1978) 400 million people have been lifted out of poverty in China—about 75 percent of the world's total poverty reduction over the last century." What is China’s next? Will China be a strategic competitor or strategic partner of the United States? Will the world becomes safer or more dangerous? Will a Sino-U.S. confrontation take place?
