Chinese Language Teachers
Summer Institute

New for 2008 at UMass Boston! The University of Massachusetts Confucius Institute, the China Program Center, and CLASS (Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools), with sponsorship from the STARTALK project, are offering a grant-funded two-week intensive summer institute entitled Chinese Culture, Chinese Language and Communication of Educational Practice for teachers of Chinese.

Programs

Chinese Language Teachers Summer Institute I
Preparatory study for the Chinese Language MTEL exam will be offered this summer on the beautiful Boston Harbor campus of University of Massachusetts Boston. The program goals are to:
  • help prepare teachers of Chinese to pass the MTEL in order to earn their Chinese language teaching certificate
  • familiarize teachers with the national standards of foreign languages and foreign language acquisition
  • promote understanding of American school culture and classroom management
  • instruct them in the application of American methodology in their teaching
  • learn Tai Chi to exercise your mind as well as your body
Participants will also be required to attend a Follow-up Day on October 18.
Chinese Language Teachers Summer Institute II
Teachers of Chinese with three or more years of teaching experience will benefit from this exceptional learning opportunity, held on the beautiful Boston Harbor campus of University of Massachusetts Boston.
The program goals are to:
  • enhance Chinese teaching through technology
  • learn skills such as LinguaFolio, modified oral proficiency interview and performance-based assessment
  • learn Tai Chi to exercise your mind as well as your body
In addition to the summer program, participants will also be required to attend a Follow-up Day on October 25.

Credits

Attendees will earn three graduate credits and PDPs from the University of Massachusetts Boston Graduate College of Education upon completion of each summer institute.

Housing

Limited complimentary housing at a nearby university may be available for participants who must travel more than 50 miles from campus in order to attend. Those interested in this option are encouraged to apply early due to the limited availability of rooms.
