Ilana Lehman is both a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and a National Certified Counselor. She received her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Education from Southern Illinois University where she was award the Lorenz/Baker Student Award. Her background includes working as a psychotherapist for both a community mental health center and for an inpatient adolescent treatment facility in Missouri before becoming a placement specialist for the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in Nebraska.
Her research regarding the employment of people with disabilities has explored both employer practices, such as the use of pre-employment testing, as well as federal and state statutes including the Americans with Disabilities Act. Her publication concerning the unintended consequences of the Family and Medical Leave Act on the employment of people with disabilities was the 12th most downloaded Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin article in July 2008. Her current research projects extend this focus to include the employment implications of technology and the Internet. She recently presented on how assistive technology can increase independence for heart failure patients with mild cognitive impairments at the Heart and Mind Conference in Prato, Italy.
