For the last twenty-five years Joan Hyde, Ph.D. has worked in the field of long term care research and practice, including, environmental and program design and implementation, in assisted living, nursing homes, senior housing and other long-term care settings. She is the Chief Executive Officer of Ivy Hall Senior Living and the Director of the Ivy Hall Research Institute, which together provide management and consulting services and carry out research in the senior living industry. From 1993 to 2006 Dr. Hyde served as Chief Executive Officer of Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, where she established and oversaw eight dementia-specific assisted living facilities in the northeast, making Assisted Living a widely accepted setting for dementia treatment.
Dr. Hyde has been simultaneously involved in long-term care and senior housing policy and health care quality research. Her research in dementia and assisted living includes two NIA-funded projects, one on environmental design for dementia and the other the development and testing of Assisted Living resident assessment and service planning software. Other research includes analysis of the impact of state regulations of assisted living, and effectiveness of medication management practices. She served as Chairman of the Board of MassALFA, the state affiliate of the leading trade organization, the Assisted Living Federation of America and on the Board of Directors, American Society of Consultant Pharmacists Foundation. Dr. Hyde received Commonwealth InstituteĆs, "Top 100 Women Led Companies in MA", in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. She holds a research fellow appointment at the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, where she also serves as faculty in the Masters Program in Aging Services, and was named a Research Associate in the Geriatric Psychiatry Program at McLean Hospital, a teaching facility of Harvard Medical School.
