Monica Simal is a current Ph. D student at Boston University. Her area of interest focuses on topics that span contemporary peninsular and Cuban literature. She holds a M.A from Montclair State University. Her masters thesis explored the writings of the Cuban author, Reinaldo Arenas, and the Spanish author, Juan Goytisolo, from the following perspectives: their creative blend of autobiography and fiction, their Cervantine sense of self-referentiality as a strategy to simultaneously authorize and deauthorize their writings, their vision of exile and the disavowal of official ideologies, and the relationship between sexual and literary subversion.
