CLSICS597 Greek and Roman Epic
Course has been cancelled
Course Description
A survey of ancient Greek and Roman epic poetry focusing on close reading and discussion of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and Vergil’s Aeneid, together with comparative consideration of other ancient works. We will consider enduring themes and traditions common to these great classical epics, as well as the ways each work reflects the social and historical context in which it was created and in turn influences later works. Discussion of primary texts will be supplemented by weekly readings from secondary scholarly literature.  Students will produce a research paper of approximately 15 pages in length.

Prerequisite: Graduate standing.
