Eric W. Hayden is Professor of Finance in the College of Management, the business school at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Before joining the faculty, he served for five years as Dean of the College.
Prior to entering academia in 1993, he held various positions in the financial services industry. From 1977-82, he was Chief Economist and then Vice President, Strategic Planning, for the Bank of America’s Asian operations, based in Tokyo, Japan. In 1982, he established and directed the bank’s Japan-based merchant banking operations. Returning to the U.S. in 1985, he joined the Bank of Boston as Managing Director of its investment banking division and led the development of the bank’s capital markets capability. In 1989, he became President of Investors Bank & Trust, the trust and mutual funds processing subsidiary of Eaton Vance. Under his leadership, the bank acquired the mutual funds processing arm of the Bank of New England. This acquisition had a major impact on both the size and focus of the bank and ultimately resulted in the bank’s going public.
Dr. Hayden is a graduate of Princeton University and earned his Ph.D. at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of the book Technology Transfer to East Europe as well as several articles, chapters, and monographs on diverse economic and financial issues. From 1967 to 1971, he served on active duty as an officer in the United States Navy. His assignments included duty on a destroyer in the Asia-Pacific arena and then as speech writer for the President of the Naval War College, Newport, R.I.
