Carol Chandler-Rourke has over two decades of experience working with diverse immigrant and refugee communities both as a teacher and an administrator of community programs. Working with Boston’s Haitian community in the 1980’s and 90’s, she developed an Adult Education Program which received national recognition for its Bilingual Teacher Training and Native Language Literacy programs. She has also been involved in the development of several community-university partnerships including: an ESL and native language community teacher training program, a university center for immigrant and refugee leadership and a community service program for ESL/literacy tutors at the University of Massachusetts/Boston where she continues to teach ESL and to coordinate the Community-University Project for Literacy (CUPL). As Director of Community Building at the Massachusetts Office for Refugees and Immigrants (MORI), Carol manages education, health and human service programs for immigrants and refugees statewide. Her special interest is in grass-roots community organizing and professional opportunities for culturally and linguistically diverse staff in education, health and human services.
