MUSIC480 Special Topics: Music of the Silk Road
Course Description
This course introduces students to the different types of Chinese music and performance techniques that are representative of the evolution of Chinese music at various times in history. Coursework includes an exploration of the social, cultural, religious, economic, and political environment of China from the antiquity to the present day and discussion of the functional relationship between Chinese music and Chinese society as developed through the years. Students will also explore the multi-faceted cultural significance of different genres of Chinese music and examination of the similarities and contrasts between Chinese music and music of the students’ own culture.
