Karen Dick is an ANCC-Certified Gerontological Nurse Practitioner who currently serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston College of Nursing and Health Sciences. She is affiliated with the Hebrew Senior Life and maintains a primary care practice with older adults at Orchard Cove, a continuing care retirement community in Canton, MA. She earned her BS at UMASS Dartmouth (1976), an MS in Gerontological Nursing (with preparation as a nurse practitioner) from Boston University (1982) along with a certificate of Gerontological Studies, and a PhD (1998) from the University of Rhode Island. Her dissertation was titled Acute Confusion in Hospitalized Elderly: A Study of Experienced Nursing Care.
Dr. Dick has twenty-six years experience as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner caring for older adults across a variety of settings including acute, subacute, long term and home care. At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, she managed a nationally recognized home care program that utilized a nurse practitioner model. Her research interests include nursing care of patients with confusion, utilization of nurse practitioners in home care of frail elders, and medication safety across care transitions.
Dr. Dick has numerous book chapters and articles and is a co-author on Clinical Management of Patients in Subacte and Long-term Care Settings (2005). She has also lectured nationally and internationally on topics including care of elders with cognitive dysfunction, primary nursing, home care for frail elders, and advanced practice nursing models.
