This course examines techniques of industry and competitive analysis and ways of applying these techniques to gain a better understanding of industry trends and company strategies in sectors of significant importance to the regional economy.

Jamaica

Jamaica Today: People, Culture, and Environment
Jan 2 - 23, 2010

The program is designed to facilitate an understanding of Jamaica through total immersion in different aspects of the country. The program will explore the culture, environment, language and literature of Jamaica, and the country’s economic, political, and social realities.

Mexico

Mexico Today: Politics and Society

Through first-hand observations, students will gain a lively appreciation of the changes that are shaping Mexico today, analyzing their experience within the broader context of political, cultural, social, and economic issues.

 

Summer 09 International Programs

Puerto Rico

Caribbean Studies Institute: Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands | June 1 - July 5, 2009

The Departments of Sociology and Anthropology of UMass Boston, in collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey, have designed a summer program dedicated to the study of the historical, socio-political, and economic structures and processes that have shaped the Caribbean into the culturally complex region it is today. Participants to earn up to nine undergraduate credits.

Focus on Kazakhstan and Central Asia: International and Comparative Management | June 1 - July 10, 2009

The UMass Boston MBA Program is pleased to offer a new program focusing on international management in collaboration with the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics, and Strategic Research (KIMEP), which will primarily address environmental, cross-cultural, and development issues in the context of an important emerging economy in the post-Soviet era.

Nubia Today: Continuity & Change | August 3 - 18, 2009

This summer the Africana Studies Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston will offer a unique academic program on location in Egypt. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the history, culture, sociology, and current political realities of both Egypt’s southern, culturally older, and northern regions.

Theatre in London | May 26 - July 6, 2009

This summer the Performing Arts Department of the University of Massachusetts Boston will offer students the opportunity study intensively English theater and then travel to the great city of London, international center for theater and the arts, to experience first-hand original dramatic productions.

China

China Today: Culture, History & Politics | May 26 - June 9, 2009

The China Today program provides an extraordinary opportunity to learn firsthand about contemporary China, its culture and historical traditions, and the social transformations taking place today.

China

Entrepreneurship in the U.S. and China | May 26 - June 9, 2009

This new course will offer students an in-depth look at how business is conducted in China, through a two-week stay in the great cities of Beijing, China’s political capital, and Shanghai, its economic capital. Participants earn six graduate credits.

Belize

Field School in Prehistoric Archaeology | June 15 - July 8, 2009

This summer the Anthropology Department will offer a field school on Maya archaeology in Belize, Central America. The project area and field camp are located in a tropical rainforest within the Programme for Belize Conservation Area-a protected reserve for flora, fauna, and archaeological remains.

Haiti

Haiti Today: People, Culture & Politics | July 13-Aug 7, 2009

This program explores the history, politics, culture, and the economic and social developments taking places in Haiti, from both external and internal perspectives.

Ghana & Benin

West Africa Today: History, Culture and Society

This once in a lifetime opportunity will explore the history of the great empires in Ghana and Benin. Participants will engage in service-learning projects on English literacy and Early Childhood Education, as well as study and learn about the rich culture, history, spiritual traditions and complex society of these two West African countries.

Toulouse & Sarlat-la-Canéda, France

Les Saveurs du Sud-Ouest

This two-week workshop, designed exclusively for educators, is comprised of seminars and field activities that will focus on contemporary issues as well as traditional aspects of French culture and society. Participants to earn three graduate credits.

The New Europe and the European Union

UMass Boston in cooperation with The University of Derry and Inch House Irish Studies Center in Ireland is pleased to offer a program, The New Europe and the European Union: The View from Ireland. This program is designed to provide students an extraordinary opportunity to learn about, and experience firsthand, the dynamic and exciting transformations occurring in Europe today, with the special emphasis on the perspective offered by Ireland. Allows participants to earn up to six undergraduate credits.
