Description for PHIL281:
In the seventeenth century, Spinoza and Locke advanced quite different sorts of arguments on behalf of religious toleration. We shall examine their arguments closely in Spinoza’s Theological and Political Treatise and in Locke’s Letter on Toleration. Each philosopher advances a conception of what the state should be, and of what religion is, in order to argue for religious toleration - and thus we shall examine their respective conceptions of the state and of religion. We shall also examine the arguments of Jonas Proast, a contemporary of Locke’s, who argues against Locke and on behalf of religious intolerance.
