English as a Second Language Programs

English in the Workplace Program

UMass Boston’s Division of Continuing, Corporate and Distance Education in Plymouth is pleased to announce a special offering of English as a Second Language course designed for the workplace, intended for non-native speakers of English in the greater Plymouth area.

The Workplace English Program aims to develop participants’ ability to communicate effectively in English, and therefore emphasizes practical training in Basic English language skills, with a specific focus on the development of listening and speaking competencies and vocabulary development related to everyday workplace situations and tasks.

To address the workplace language needs of participants, the curriculum will incorporate, as appropriate and available, the actual terminology used by employees in their specific job activities.

Instructional strategies will include structured conversation, guided discussion, short readings, text-based exercises, role-playing scripts, and the use of audiovisual materials.

In the case of classes cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, such as inclement weather, or at the request of the instructor, reasonable effort will be made to schedule make-up classes.

Pre-instructional assessment

Before beginning instruction, the English language proficiency level of all participants will be tested; this assessment will consist of a personal interview and a standardized test. The assessment results will guide the instructor in selecting appropriate texts and materials, and help in the identification of any special areas that need to be addressed. This session will be one of the 10 class meetings.

Course materials

All texts and classroom materials are provided by UMass Boston.

Class Size

It is expected that class size will not exceed 15 participants.
